8 Best Z-Wave Controllers: Be Everywhere At Home

For several years now I've had a Vera Edge at home providing all my z-wave needs. I only really use it as a mechanism to get all my devices integrated into home assistant, which is the brains of the operation. "Save changes" just initiates luup reload, but parameters stay the same. "Configure node right now" does not help either, Vera informs that command sent, but nothing happens. I don't see anyone else saying there is an issue, but I am not sure how many people are still using it at this point. It might be something with the iCloud account, but it works everywhere else.

The Vera lite is an affordable home controller with no monthly fees, which will function as the brain of the entire house that controls pretty much everything and is at your service. One of the things that makes the Vera Lite so popular is its simplicity when it comes to set up. The Vera Lite also has a wide Universal Compatibility enabling you to customize your Vera network selecting devices without having to take into consideration their manufacturers. Although the Nexia Bridge is one of the cheapest Z-Wave controllers out there, it requires a monthly subscription of $9.99, which adds to the final cost.

Like pretty much all Z-Wave hubs, you can access your Vera Lite and control it from any place in the world using an internet browser via your smartphone, tablet, or PC. It has a very cool minimalist design and an intuitive user interface. Hubitat Elevation Elevate your home with a small and capable device. With all the advantages it offers, Hubitat is one of the hubs with a fast-growing community and delighted customers. It is controlled through a dedicated application called SmartThings app that you can install on your smartphone and which is available for Android, iOS, and Windows phones. But your phone operating system’s version should be equal or greater than 4.0 for Android, iOS 7.0 for iPhone/iPad, and 8.1 for Windows Phone.

You can also use the web app IFTTT to create “recipes” to automate various tasks and choose your desired triggers. This nicely designed unit won’t cost much and can stand alone on your bookshelf or coffee table without disturbing your decor. The Wink Hub 2 has an incredible language compatibility as it can work along with Z-Wave, ZigBee, Kidde Smoke, WiFi, Clear Connect, and Bluetooth. Wink is compatible with many famous brands such as Nest, Chamberlain, Philips, Schlage, and more. I know I can manually run backups from the UI but wondering if there's a more "standard" method that would allow me to move to another platform if required. This would require me to pull my (important definition, I feel. This shouldn't be a secret) encryption key off of the Vera as part of the backup - so any pointers there would be helpful as well.

No need to be a geek to handle this type of technology and brands are working hard to make these devices as simple as possible to target a broader range of audiences, not only the techy ones. The vera can run both its zwave and zigbee network off of external USB radios instead of the onboard ones. This could have advantages in terms of portability, facilitating migrations or recoveries in case the vera craps out. I used Vera’s scene builder to create this and other scenarios. Vera Controls allows your home technology work for you, not the other way around. Simple and secure wireless set up makes things fast and easy, right out of the box.

And best of all, Vera home automation supplies are compatible with hundreds of Z-Wave certified devices, including those available at Home Controls. Vera z-wave controllers are compatible with brands you already use like GE, Sonos, Honeywell, and Nest many others. Long-distance is near an obstacle to connect and control your home devices remotely, and the Z-Wave Alliance campaign launched proves it. They have sponsored a trip into the Himalayas where Mariusz Malkowski demonstrated, from the summit of Cho Oyu , how he uses his Z-Wave controller to manipulate his thermostat, lights, deadbolts and so on. With a minimum of two devices, you can begin building your collection. Start first with a Z-Wave controller and another Z-Wave product of your choice.

You may feel a little overwhelmed if you want to install multiple devices at once. A Z-Wave controller is a device that allows you to control all the Z-Wave devices connected to the wireless network via the internet. Some controllers don’t require internet service like the Homeseer SEL, which I’ve already reviewed on this page. To illustrate that, think of a standard remote with which you can control your TV, cable, and Blu-Ray player altogether. In addition to that, you will need a computer to plug the Z-Wave stick into and start using it. It’s not a bad idea to begin with the Aeotec stick, but for long term use, I personally think that you should opt for an independent z-Wave controller.

Nexia drops a new model Nexia BR200 Home Bridge, more aesthetically appealing, and provides Wi-Fi connectivity to your home router. This Nexia Bridge will allow, like other Z-Wave controllers on the list, to control and supervise lights, locks, thermostats, and more. Of course, to reach that number, you should have a big budget, but you can start small and grow your arsenal little by little. TRACES is a centralised database which allows the monitoring of consignments of live animals and animal products checked at the BCPs.

I don't mind trying something indirect, as for instance I've already linked the weights over to my Google Fit app. I know this was floating around on the other forum but just hoping someone can post the steps as I’m finally biting the bullet and moving to a USB stick and Zwave JS in home assistant. Download our FREE Guides to help you better plan for integrating the products and technologies you see on Electronic House into your own home. Overall I give the Vera by Mi Casa Verde very high marks; it represents a major step in the evolution of home automation and bringing new home technologies to the masses. This provides greater control over the energy usage in the home.

Instead of using a remote for each smart home device, one Z-Wave controller will be enough. A Z-Wave controller will be the central hub of all these products and which will allow them to talk and respond with each other. Nevertheless, pairing various protocols could be a little tricky for a newbie and may require some online reading. After grasping the steps of connecting multiple devices to the mesh network, growing your setup won’t be a difficult task. One major point for you to choose this hub is because it’s privacy-focused. After the setup, you can run the device locally, but you can always pump up your game with internet connectivity.

Easily replace your existing standard wall switches and dimmers with smart ones that can be controlled and automated from anywhere. Z-Wave devices have made possible a new era of DIY home automation. Specifically, I'm worried about a controller failure and unable to source a new one where I could just use the included backup facilities. There isn't any local control at all as best as I can tell, I can't integrate it with Home Assistant, and doing anything at all requires a clunky app and the cloud. Not sure what I need to do for the other stations to show up as devices in Vera. A door sensor is tripped when it opens the door, for some reason it does not go back to an Untripped state when it closes. Or a motion sensor likewise, arms with a movement, and then does not disarm even though there is no more presence to justify being armed. Has anyone figured out a way to move data from a WiFi-connected scale into the Vera environment?

Because the Vera is a network attached device, it can be accessed from any browser, not just in the home, but remotely as well. It does not require any PC in the home to be powered on all the time. The company has claimed, however, that its lock works only with Schlage’s own hardware and software, apparently for security reasons. The only thing left to do was get the Schlage lock connected and the IP camera running.

To set up your device, you will need to download a new app, SmartThings . The smart hub works with Android (6.0 or later) or IOS (11.0 or later). Recently I ordered a few new z-wave devices that have z-wave 700 chips. I've got all of my automation on MSR and off of luup Reactor, so really the only thing left for me is to migrate my Z-wave network. I saw @rafale77's post about using a Zwave.me UZB1 to Zway, but of course that's not what I'm using.

TRACES may automatically exchange data on import controls with customs authorities, which has enabled DG TAXUD and DG SANTE to develop an EU Single Window project. Zigbee is a little trickier as the protocol and chipset was not quite as standardized as zwave. The vera only works with ember Znet protocol and you will need to find a usb stick with an EM35x chip in it which already has an ember zigbee firmware loaded. One example of such a stick is the Go Control HUSBZB1 (dual zwave-zigbee stick).

I've got a stable Home Assistant running on a RPI 4 with a Aeotec Z-Stick 7 Plus, and of course the Z-wave JS integration. I've manually moved a handful of devices, and I'm overall much happier with the HA z-wave capability than I am with Vera. There are still some things I'm trying to figure out that I have in Vera that I'm not sure how they'll work in HA, but no deal breakers. Add this to my existing Leviton Vizia RF+ Z-wave network and you have a very complete home automation system. Mi Casa Verde sent me one Vera hub, which acts as the central “server” to the system, a wireless IP camera, and a Schlage Z-Wave door lock.
